Jamie Carragher suspects Cristiano Ronaldo would enjoy winning the Ballon d'Or more than the Champions League

The Portuguese was named on the shortlist for this year's Ballon d'Or this week - and Carragher has questioned whether he puts personal glory first

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has taken a pop at Cristiano Ronaldo , suspecting that the Real Madrid superstar is more concerned by winning individual than team honours.

Ronaldo was on the list shortlist for the Ballon d'Or that was announced this week, as the Portuguese looks to win the award for the fourth time.

But Carragher has questioned whether the 31-year-old is more driven by the quest for personal glory.

"You get the feeling he would take more satisfaction winning the Ballon d’Or than he would get winning the Champions League," writes Carragher in the Daily Mail .

"Take last week against Athletic Bilbao. I couldn’t help but laugh when I saw him appeal that the winner scored by Alvaro Morata — his team-mate — was offside. Some of his team-mates have tried to argue Ronaldo has been misinterpreted but look at the pictures.

"There is the difference between Messi and Ronaldo — I make no secret whose camp I am in. It is Messi every single time."

Carragher's comments echo those of Arsene Wenger, who spoke out against the award in a press conference yesterday .

"I am against it because I think it gets in the head of players," Wenger said.

"We have seen many people only thinking about themselves because they are obsessed by Ballon d’Or and not by the team performance and I believe football is a collective sport and we live already in a world where everything is individualised.

"We want to respect what football is about, first about the team effort," he continued in what could be seen as a not-so thinly veiled dig at some of the players that are hell bent on winning the award.
